SanDisk vs iStorage Feature Comparison
Interface and Speed
The SanDisk SSD Plus uses a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, delivering sequential read speeds of up to 545MB/s and write speeds of up to 515MB/s. This makes it a strong candidate for internal desktop or laptop upgrades where you need reliable, high-throughput storage for everyday tasks like gaming and photo editing. The iStorage diskAshur2 relies on USB 3.2 connectivity, offering read speeds up to 361MB/s and write speeds up to 358MB/s. While these speeds are respectable for a portable drive, they are slower than the internal SATA connection. You will notice a clear performance difference if you are moving large files between devices versus using the drive as a primary system drive.
Security Features
Security is where the iStorage diskAshur2 clearly distinguishes itself. It features AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption that activates immediately when you enter a 7-15 digit PIN. The drive incorporates a Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified secure microprocessor, ensuring data remains protected even if the device is lost or stolen. No software is required for this encryption. In contrast, the SanDisk SSD Plus does not list any built-in hardware encryption or password protection features in its specifications. It relies on standard SATA security protocols, which are not highlighted as a primary feature. If you carry sensitive personal or corporate data, the iStorage drive provides a robust, hardware-level shield that the SanDisk model lacks.
Form Factor
The physical design of each drive dictates where you can install it. The SanDisk SSD Plus is a 2.5-inch, 7mm internal drive. This standard form factor allows it to fit directly into most desktop PCs and older laptops, replacing a traditional hard disk drive for a significant internal storage boost. The iStorage diskAshur2 is a portable external drive measuring 4.72 inches by 3.15 inches by 0.59 inches. It is designed to be carried in a pocket or bag, connecting via USB. You cannot install the iStorage drive internally. If you are upgrading an existing computer, the SanDisk drive is the only viable option for internal installation.
Durability and Build
Both drives are built for reliability, but they protect against different threats. The SanDisk SSD Plus has no moving parts, which helps it resist shock and vibration during normal desktop use. It is covered by a limited 3-year warranty. The iStorage diskAshur2 is designed for rugged, mobile environments. It is IP56 certified, meaning it is dust-tight and resistant to low-pressure water jets. This makes it suitable for outdoor use or harsh conditions where a standard internal drive would fail. If you need a drive that can survive accidental spills or dusty environments while on the go, the iStorage build quality offers superior physical protection.
Storage Capacity
Storage capacity determines how much data you can keep. The SanDisk SSD Plus model listed offers 2TB of space, which is ideal for storing high-resolution photos, videos, and large game libraries. The iStorage diskAshur2 model listed offers 1TB of space. While the iStorage brand offers variations up to 16TB, the specific unit compared here holds less data than the SanDisk option. If your primary goal is to maximize storage space in a single drive without worrying about encryption overhead, the 2TB SanDisk drive provides double the capacity of the 1TB iStorage drive. You get more room for files with the SanDisk option.
Choose the Right Drive for Your Needs
Upgrading an older desktop or laptop PC
You need a reliable internal drive to replace a slow hard disk. The SanDisk SSD Plus offers sequential read speeds of up to 545MB/s and write speeds of up to 515MB/s. Its 2.5-inch form factor fits standard bays. This interface provides faster boot times and application launches for everyday tasks.
Protecting sensitive data on the go
Security is your priority. The iStorage diskAshur2 uses hardware encryption with AES-XTS 256-bit keys. You authenticate access with a PIN, ensuring no unauthorized entry. It meets GDPR and HIPAA compliance standards. The drive is portable and rugged, making it ideal for carrying confidential files across different devices safely.
Need maximum storage capacity for media
You require ample space for high-resolution photos and videos. The SanDisk model provides 2TB of storage capacity. It integrates SLC caching to boost burst write performance. This setup handles productivity work and photo editing efficiently. You get more room for your library compared to the 1TB option in the other drive.
