You might be looking for sandisk professional 2tb pro g40 SSD alternatives if its specific combination of Thunderbolt 3 connectivity and rugged durability does not match your exact workflow. The PRO-G40 delivers up to 2700MB/s read speeds and features an IP68 rating with crush resistance, making it ideal for harsh environments. However, you may prefer a different interface, a more compact form factor, or a different brand entirely. Some users prioritize silent operation or specific host compatibility over raw bandwidth.
We selected these 6 alternatives because their published specifications overlap significantly with the PRO-G40’s core capabilities. Each option offers 2TB of storage and USB-C connectivity, ensuring broad compatibility with modern devices. You will find choices that emphasize NVMe performance, budget-friendly pricing, or specialized laptop integration. This list compares external SSDs based strictly on their technical data, helping you identify the drive that best fits your size, speed, and durability requirements without unnecessary guesswork.
Our top pick: SanDisk PRO-G40 2TB Thunderbolt 3 SSD.
How each alternative compares
OWC Envoy Pro FX 2TB Portable SSD
The OWC Envoy Pro FX 2TB uses NVMe technology and USB-C 10Gbps interfaces rather than Thunderbolt 3. It offers a larger physical footprint at 4.3 by 2.6 by 0.8 inches, making it less pocket-friendly than the SanDisk PRO-G40. You get silent operation and cross-platform compatibility for Mac and Windows users. This drive prioritizes professional workflows over extreme ruggedness, lacking the IP68 water resistance and crush protection of the PRO-G40. It is a better choice if you need a durable aluminum build without the bulk of Thunderbolt controllers.
SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD
The SanDisk Extreme 2TB Portable SSD focuses on robust durability and strong encryption rather than maximum theoretical bandwidth. It connects via USB-C but does not support Thunderbolt 3, meaning you will not reach the 2700MB/s read speeds of the PRO-G40. The drive is lighter at 1.76 ounces and slightly thinner. You should pick this alternative if you prioritize hardware encryption and rugged reliability over raw speed. It fits mobile professionals who need secure, pocket-sized storage that can withstand drops and dust without the premium cost of Thunderbolt connectivity.
SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD
This SanDisk Extreme 2TB model is even more compact than the previous version, measuring just 1.95 by 3.79 by 0.35 inches. It weighs only 1.38 ounces, making it the most pocket-friendly option on this list. Like the other Extreme models, it uses USB-C without Thunderbolt 3 support, so it cannot match the PRO-G40’s 2700MB/s read speeds. It is ideal for photographers and videographers who need reliable, durable storage that fits easily into a pocket. You give up high-speed data transfer capabilities in exchange for extreme portability and build quality.
Seagate FireCuda 2TB External NVMe SSD
The Seagate FireCuda 2TB External NVMe SSD is designed for laptop gamers who need portable NVMe performance. It connects via USB-C and lacks Thunderbolt 3 support, so it does not offer the 40Gbps bandwidth of the PRO-G40. The drive is slightly larger and heavier at 7.76 ounces, with dimensions of 4.11 by 2.07 by 0.39 inches. It is a solid choice if you prioritize USB-C convenience and compact design for gaming setups. You sacrifice the PRO-G40’s IP68 rating and crush resistance for a form factor tailored to laptop users.
SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD
This SanDisk Extreme 2TB Portable SSD is nearly identical to the previous model in performance and features. It uses USB-C connectivity without Thunderbolt 3, limiting speeds below the PRO-G40’s 2700MB/s read capability. The dimensions are 3.97 by 2.07 by 0.38 inches, and it weighs 1.76 ounces. It offers rugged durability and encryption for users who value security and reliability. You should choose this alternative if you need a secure, compact USB-C drive and do not require the extreme speed or Thunderbolt connectivity of the PRO-G40.
Kingston XS2000 2TB Portable SSD
The Kingston XS2000 2TB Portable SSD supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 speeds, offering strong performance for users with compatible ports. It connects via USB-C and does not include Thunderbolt 3, so it cannot match the PRO-G40’s 2700MB/s read speeds. The drive is compact at 2.74 by 1.28 by 0.53 inches and weighs 1.92 ounces. It is a good option if Thunderbolt is not available on your system. You trade the PRO-G40’s rugged IP68 rating and crush resistance for a lighter, more affordable portable storage solution with solid USB-C performance.
