SABRENT vs iStorage NVMe SSDs Compared
Interface and Speed
The SABRENT Rocket uses a PCIe Gen3 x 4 interface with NVMe 1.3 compliance. This internal connection allows for significantly higher bandwidth compared to standard USB connections. The iStorage diskAshur2 relies on USB 3.2 for data transfer. Its maximum read speed reaches 361MB/s, while write speeds hit 358MB/s. While these speeds are decent for portable use, they are much slower than the internal PCIe pathway. If you need raw throughput for heavy workloads, the internal interface of the SABRENT drive offers a clear performance advantage over the USB connection of the iStorage model.
Form Factor
Form factor dictates where and how you install the drive. The SABRENT Rocket is an M.2 2280 internal SSD. It fits directly into motherboard slots inside desktops or laptops. The iStorage diskAshur2 is a portable external drive. It connects via USB and is designed for transport. The SABRENT drive is compact, measuring 3.15 inches by 0.86 inches by 0.11 inches. The iStorage unit is larger at 4.72 inches by 3.15 inches by 0.59 inches. Your choice depends on whether you need internal storage expansion or a removable drive for travel.
Security Features
Security needs differ greatly between these two products. The iStorage diskAshur2 focuses heavily on data protection. It includes hardware encryption using AES-XTS 256-bit and requires a 7-15 digit PIN for access. It is Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified and helps meet GDPR and HIPAA compliance. The SABRENT Rocket does not list hardware encryption or PIN protection in its specifications. It supports SMART and TRIM commands for maintenance, but lacks the robust physical security features found in the iStorage drive. For sensitive data, the iStorage model is superior.
Storage Capacity
Capacity options vary between the two brands. The SABRENT Rocket shown here is a 2TB model. It is also available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 4TB variants. The iStorage diskAshur2 in this comparison is a 1TB model. However, it offers a wider range of options, including 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 2TB, 4TB, 8TB, and 16TB. If you need massive storage like 16TB, the iStorage line provides that option. For the specific 2TB model compared here, the SABRENT drive offers double the space of the 1TB iStorage unit.
Durability and Build
Build quality addresses physical resilience. The iStorage diskAshur2 is IP56 certified, making it dust and splashproof. This rugged design protects the drive during travel or in harsh environments. The SABRENT Rocket is an internal drive with no listed IP rating. It is designed to operate inside a computer case, protected from dust and moisture by the enclosure. The iStorage drive is built for external portability and physical resistance. The SABRENT drive is built for internal stability. Neither is explicitly superior without knowing your usage environment.
Compatibility
Compatibility determines which devices can use the drive. The iStorage diskAshur2 works with any device having a USB port. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome, Android, and various thin clients. It requires no software installation. The SABRENT Rocket requires a motherboard with an M.2 slot supporting PCIe Gen3 x 4. It is not plug-and-play for external use. The iStorage model offers broader device compatibility, including mobile and embedded systems. The SABRENT drive is limited to computers with the correct internal slot.
