Who it fits
Good fit for
You should consider this drive if you need a replacement for a handheld gaming PC or a slim laptop that uses the 2230 slot. The small physical size fits devices where standard 2280 drives are too long. The PCIe Gen4 interface ensures you get current speed standards for everyday tasks. Since it is an internal SSD, it helps expand storage in systems that lack room for larger drives. It is a practical choice for upgrading older compact hardware with modern NVMe technology.
Who should skip it
You should skip this option if you require more than 256GB of space. Many users need larger capacities for games or large files, and this drive offers limited room. It is also not suitable for systems that only accept the more common 2280 form factor. You must check your device specifications carefully to ensure it supports the shorter 2230 size. Additionally, the bulk packaging means you do not receive any mounting screws or adapters, so you need to source those separately.
Verdict: This is a specialized drive for tight spaces using modern PCIe Gen4 speeds. It works well for specific 2230 slots but lacks capacity for heavy users.
Key specs for this drive
Storage Capacity: 256GB
This drive holds 256 gigabytes of data. You can store your operating system, essential applications, and a modest number of files. It is not suitable for large media libraries or heavy game collections. If you need more space, you must look for larger capacities. This size is ideal for basic computing tasks or as a secondary drive for specific files.
Interface: PCIe Gen 4x4
The drive uses the fourth generation of the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express interface. This allows for high-speed data transfer between the SSD and your motherboard. It is significantly faster than older PCIe Gen 3 drives. Ensure your motherboard supports Gen 4 to get the best performance. SATA SSDs are much slower, so this interface offers a clear upgrade for speed-sensitive tasks.
Form Factor: M.2 2230
The physical size is 22mm wide by 30mm long. This is smaller than the standard M.2 2280 drive. It is designed for devices with limited space, such as modern laptops or handheld gaming consoles like the Steam Deck. You must check your device's compatibility list before buying. Standard desktop motherboards often require adapters or do not support this short length without specific slots.
Key Type: M Key
The connector has notches on the right side of the pins. This physical design ensures the drive fits only into compatible M.2 slots. It prevents incorrect installation. Most M.2 NVMe slots use an M Key. If your slot has a different key layout, such as B Key, this drive will not fit. Verify your slot type to ensure proper mechanical and electrical connection.
Design and build specs
The listing describes the Oemgenuine Kioxia drive as an M.2 2230 PCIe NVMe SSD. Its dimensions are 22mm by 30mm by 2.38mm. This compact form factor fits into tight spaces. You will find this size common in modern laptops and handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck. The M Key interface ensures correct insertion. It prevents you from forcing the drive into incompatible slots that require different pin configurations. The drive is sold in bulk packaging. You receive only the solid state drive itself. Any mounting screws, cables, or adapter brackets are not included. You must purchase those accessories separately if your system does not provide them.
According to the listing, the drive features a 2-year warranty from Oemgenuine. This coverage applies to the internal components. It does not cover physical damage from improper installation. The small footprint allows for flexible placement within your chassis. You can mount it in locations where larger 2280 drives would not fit. The lack of included hardware means you need to check your device manual before buying. Ensure you have the correct M.2 screws or adhesive tape ready for installation. The design prioritizes space efficiency over included accessories. This approach keeps the unit slim and light. It suits users who need extra storage in devices with limited internal room. The build focuses on the core storage component without additional bulk.
Installation and daily operation
Setup begins with verifying your system supports the M.2 2230 form factor. This drive measures 22mm by 30mm, a size distinct from the more common 2280 modules. You must ensure your motherboard or device has a compatible slot. The listing notes this drive is compatible with both laptops and desktops, provided they accept the 2230 size. You will need to check your specific hardware manual for slot availability. The interface is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe. This standard allows for high-speed data transfer, which benefits quick boot times and rapid file access. However, the 256GB capacity limits your storage options. You should plan to use this drive for your operating system and core applications. Large games or extensive video libraries will fill this space quickly. The product comes in bulk packaging. This means you receive only the drive itself. You are responsible for sourcing any necessary mounting screws, cables, or adapters. These components are not included and are sold separately. This is a critical step for installation. Once installed, the drive operates as an internal storage solution. The 2.38mm thickness allows it to fit into thin chassis designs. You benefit from the speed of NVMe technology in a compact package. The warranty is a 2-Year Oemgenuine Warranty. This provides a baseline of support for your purchase. Always verify that your system’s BIOS is updated to support NVMe drives for optimal performance.
Check compatibility and packaging
Before you install this drive, verify your motherboard or handheld device supports the M.2 2230 form factor. This size is smaller than the standard 2280 modules. You must check that your slot accepts the 22mm width and 30mm length. The listing notes the drive is bulk packaged. You will need to source any mounting screws or adapters separately. These accessories are not included. Ensure your system supports PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interfaces for optimal performance. This compact drive fits well in space-constrained laptops and gaming handhelds. It serves as a solid option for users needing extra storage without the bulk of larger drives. Compare it against other 2230 models if you require higher capacities or different interfaces. Check your device manual for specific compatibility requirements before purchasing to avoid installation issues.

Frequently asked questions
Is this drive compatible with PS5 consoles?
No. The Oemgenuine Kioxia drive uses the M.2 2230 form factor. PS5 consoles require the larger M.2 2280 size. You cannot fit this 22mm by 30mm drive into a standard PS5 expansion slot. It is designed for compact handhelds and small laptops instead.
What interface does this SSD use?
It uses the NVMe protocol over a PCIe Gen4x4 interface. This connection method allows for high-speed data transfer between the drive and your system. It is significantly faster than older SATA connections. The drive is built for modern systems that support Gen4 speeds.
Can I use this for a desktop PC?
Only if your motherboard has an M.2 2230 slot. Most desktop boards use the larger M.2 2280 size. You must check your specific motherboard specifications before buying. This drive is best suited for handheld gaming devices or compact mini-ITX builds where space is limited.
How much storage does this model provide?
It provides 256GB of total storage capacity. This amount is suitable for an operating system and a few essential applications. It is not ideal for large media libraries or extensive game collections. You may need to manage your files carefully to stay within this limit.
Does it come with a mounting screw?
The provided data does not mention included mounting hardware. You should verify the package contents before installation. Most M.2 drives require a specific screw to secure the module to the motherboard. You may need to source this separately if it is not in the box.
Is this drive suitable for Steam Deck?
Yes. The product is listed as best for compact handheld gaming devices. The M.2 2230 form factor matches the slot size found in devices like the Steam Deck. It offers a fast PCIe Gen4x4 connection, which can improve load times in supported games.
