PRO2 vs M2 Specs Compared
Transfer Speeds
The iStorage diskAshur PRO2 256GB Secure SSD offers read speeds up to 361MB/s and write speeds up to 358MB/s. The iStorage diskAshur M2 240GB Encrypted Portable SSD provides slightly faster performance, with both read and write speeds reaching up to 370MB/s. While both drives utilize USB 3.2 interfaces for backward compatibility, the M2 holds a slight edge in raw throughput. For most everyday file transfers, the difference is minimal. However, if you frequently move large datasets, the M2’s consistent 370MB/s speed may feel marginally quicker than the PRO2’s asymmetric read-write profile.
Security Certification
Security is critical for these drives. The diskAshur PRO2 256GB Secure SSD is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certified. This is a higher standard than the diskAshur M2 240GB Encrypted Portable SSD, which is FIPS Compliant but does not specify Level 3. The PRO2 also includes a Common Criteria EAL 5+ secure microprocessor. If you require strict government-grade validation for compliance with regulations like HIPAA or GDPR, the PRO2 offers verified Level 3 protection. The M2 provides solid hardware encryption, but the PRO2’s certification is more rigorous for high-security environments.
Build and Durability
Physical ruggedness differs between the two models. The diskAshur M2 240GB Encrypted Portable SSD is IP68 accredited, meaning it survives submersion in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. It is also crushproof, withstanding the weight of a 2.7-ton vehicle. The diskAshur PRO2 256GB Secure SSD is IP56 certified, protecting against dust and water jets, but it lacks the M2’s submersion rating and crushproof claim. If your work involves exposure to liquids or heavy impacts, the M2’s superior IP68 rating and crushproof design offer better physical protection for your data.
Storage Capacity
Capacity is a key decision factor. The diskAshur PRO2 256GB Secure SSD provides 256GB of storage. The diskAshur M2 240GB Encrypted Portable SSD offers 240GB. The PRO2 gives you 16GB more space, which can be useful for storing slightly larger files or maintaining free space for drive longevity. Both drives are portable SSDs, so the difference is small. However, if you need every possible megabyte for your documents or media, the PRO2’s 256GB capacity is the better choice. For most users, this 16GB difference will not significantly impact daily usage.
Portability and Size
Portability depends on your carrying habits. The diskAshur M2 240GB Encrypted Portable SSD is described as slim, sleek, and smaller than a phone. It weighs 65 grams without a sleeve. The diskAshur PRO2 256GB Secure SSD is larger, measuring 4.88 inches in length and weighing 7.9 ounces (approximately 224 grams). The M2 is significantly lighter and more compact. If you carry your drive in a pocket or small bag daily, the M2’s ultra-portable design is more convenient. The PRO2 is bulkier, making it better suited for desk use or occasional transport rather than constant pocket carry.
Which iStorage diskAshur drive suits you
Users needing top-tier government compliance
The PRO2 holds FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification and Common Criteria EAL 5+ hardware security. This strict validation ensures compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA regulations. You get robust protection for sensitive corporate or personal data without needing extra software. The drive encrypts data in real time using AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption.
Those prioritizing rugged durability and speed
The M2 offers slightly faster transfer speeds, reaching 370MB/s for both reading and writing. It is also more rugged, surviving drops from 4 meters and crush tests from 2.7-ton vehicles. With IP68 accreditation, it resists water submersion and dust. This model is ideal if you need a drive that withstands harsh physical conditions.
Users wanting a compact, portable form factor
The M2 is smaller and lighter than the PRO2, making it easier to carry in a pocket or bag. It weighs just 65 grams without its sleeve. The slim design fits easily into tight spaces. You get portable SSD performance in a sleek package that is less bulky than the graphite PRO2, which measures larger in all dimensions.
